In situ X-ray quantification of melt pool behaviour during directed energy deposition additive manufacturing of stainless steel

چکیده

The Directed Energy Deposition Additive Manufacturing (DED-AM) of SS316L was studied using in situ and operando synchrotron X-ray imaging to quantitively understand the effect processing parameters on melt-pool morphology surface quality. It found that roughness DED-AM builds can result from melt pool perturbations caused by changes flow build stage motion perturbations. Process maps are developed quantitatively correlate quality process including powder feed rate, laser power traverse speed. How AM control efficacy is clarified, conditions required dampen leading were determined.

Mechanical Properties of Austenitic Stainless Steel Made by Additive Manufacturing

Using uniaxial tensile and hardness testing, we evaluated the variability and anisotropy of the mechanical properties of an austenitic stainless steel, UNS S17400, manufactured by an additive process, selective laser melting. Like wrought materials, the mechanical properties depend on the orientation introduced by the processing. The recommended stress-relief heat treatment increases the tensil...

An Overview of Additive Manufacturing of Titanium Components by Directed Energy Deposition: Microstructure and Mechanical Properties

The directed energy deposition (DED) process can be employed to build net shape components or prototypes starting from powder or wires, through a layer-by-layer process. This process provides an opportunity to fabricate complex shaped and functionally graded parts that can be utilized in different engineering applications. DED uses a laser as a focused heat source to melt the in-situ delivered ...

Porosity Detection of Laser Based Additive Manufacturing Using Melt Pool Morphology Clustering

The microstructural and mechanical properties of Laser Based Additive Manufacturing (LBAM) are still inconsistent and unreliable, which is a major barrier that prevents Additive Manufacturing (AM) from entering main stream production. The key challenge is the lack of understanding for the underlying process-properties relationship. We monitor Laser Engineered Net Shaped (LENS) process using a s...

In-Situ X-Ray Characterization of Fiber Structure During Melt Spinning

The properties of a polymer are strongly influenced by its morphology. In the case of fibers from semicrystalline polymers this consists of the degree of crystallinity, the spacing and alignment of the crystalline regions, and molecular orientation of the polymer chains in the amorphous regions. Information on crystallinity and orientation can be obtained from X-ray analysis. In-situ X-ray char...
